WhatsApp testing Instagram-like message reaction feature

WhatsApp is testing a new feature called message reactions. It will allow users to express their sentiments for that particular message. This is similar to how reactions are available on platforms including iMessage, Instagram, Twitter, etc.

As of now, WhatsApp users show their reactions either by sending a separate emoji after the message or with a reply. But the message reaction feature will make the experience much more streamlined for users.

Our folks over at WABetaInfo say that the feature will be available in a future update for beta testers and will later be rolled out widely. Just like Instagram DMs, WhatsApp users should be able to add emoji expressions to individual messages after the implementation of this feature.

Judging from the above-mentioned screenshot, if a user receives a message reaction on an older version, a WhatsApp notification will be flashed on the screen with a message suggesting the users update the app to the latest version. Although, users can’t see the message but beware of receiving it.

Anyways, the company hasn’t officially announced the change yet but the screenshot clearly suggests its arrival. Also, there’s still much to be known about, such as what emojis WhatsApp will use for message reactions and others.

Besides, as usual, it seems that the new WhatsApp feature will be rolled out for Android smartphone users and then for iOS and desktop Web. Let’s wait for more information to arrive in the future.
