First Android 12 custom ROMs are available to download

Android 12 has been just released. We usually see the start of custom ROMs within just a week following the release of a new and stable version of Android. And, this is what happened with Android 12.

The Android 12 ROMs have been released and the first featured Android 12 ROM is delivered for the Redmi K20 Pro, also known as the Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro globally.

Going by the report by XDA, these builds are completely stable and ready for use. However, its only broken feature is that SELinux is set to Permissive.

Moreover, as the “Monet” theming system is not yet fully open-sourced, this ROM uses an alternative dynamic theming system recreation made by a third-party developer to support wallpaper-based theming. But, it may eventually arrive in a “full” form at some point.

Anyways, there is no doubt that Android has become more and more modularized since the arrival of Project Treble, making custom ROMs closer and closer to Generic System Images, or GSIs.

Thanks to the magic of Project Treble, all Treble-enabled devices with an unlockable bootloader can try out Android 12. The GSIs is being produced as a “one-size-fits-all” solution for a lot of phones, however, they tend to be a bit buggier than regular custom ROMs, and this is especially early, so if you end up installing it on a device, maybe don’t put it on your daily driver.
