New Xiaomi smartphone patent shows side mounted in-screen fingerprint sensor

Every year Xiaomi files hundreds of patents to introduce new and advanced technologies. However, many of them never implement in commercial products. Still, it’s always exciting to know the new designs.

In the recent patent, the company shows a unique smartphone design with a curved screen that has a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. According to 91mobiles, the patent was registered in March 2020 and was published on June 3, 2021.

Anyways, the design shows an edge-to-edge display on the front, which means that it could be a premium phone. It has a fingerprint sensor placed right at the corner, where the screen curves.

It should be United that it is not a usual fingerprint sensor. It is implanted under the curved display instead of a separate housing that forms part of the frame. The design looks similar to Xiaomi Mi 10i, which was launched earlier this year.

Currently, most curved smartphones sport an AMOLED panel. But Xiaomi seems to be working on a curved IPS LCD display with a fingerprint scanner situated on the side.

Besides, the patent figures do not reveal any other design elements regarding this handset. Also, since it’s just a patent, we cannot believe that Xiaomi will actually be introducing this kind of smartphone.

However, the formation of a curved IPS LCD display could mean a big change for budget and mid-range smartphones that don’t offer an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Just a couple of days ago, we have seen three patent designs of Xiaomi smartphones. All of these are camera focused designs having a large rear camera module. One of them even looks similar to Samsung Galaxy S21 series. Check the details here.
