Meet Xiaomi smartphone featuring Galaxy S21-like camera system

Xiaomi registers hundreds of different innovations every year. Yet, most of them never implement in commercial products. But it’s always curious to know where engineering and design are heading.

Today it became known about another curious idea of the company. According to LetsGoDigital, Xiaomi has recently been granted patents for new smartphone models that feature large camera modules on the rear.

Beijing Xiaomi Mobile Software filed this patent in March this year at the Hague Design System, part of the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). However, the documentation was published on June 11, under the heading ‘Mobile phone, back cover for mobile phone’.

Moreover, the documentation shows three phone models, which clearly focus on rear camera design.

Model 1:

The first model looks beautiful. Its design seems to be inspired by Samsung Galaxy S21 series. The camera module is quite large that it takes up almost half of the housing when considering the height.

The quad-camera lenses are placed vertically from each other while a narrow elongated flash is placed on their left. The top three cameras have a round design, among which the first camera lens has the largest design.

Following this, another rectangle camera is shown. However, it remains unclear whether this is a telephoto camera or an extra sensor.

Besides, we see a small circle, which could be an extra microphone, useful when making video recordings. The mobile phone has relatively narrow screen edges.

On the front, a centrally placed punch-hole camera is integrated. On the right, several buttons are added, probably the power button and the volume buttons. The microphone is visible on the left, the USB-C connection seems to have moved to the right.

The SIM compartment is accessible from the top of the device. The underside looks a bit more mysterious, the narrow elongated element in the middle remains unknown, it may be a speaker. An IR blaster seems to be missing.

Model 2:

The second patent shows many similarities with the Xiaomi Mi 11i and to a somewhat lesser extent with the Redmi Note 10 Pro. The oval-shaped camera island contains two large camera lenses, with a smaller camera and a sensor in between.

The image shows an extra rectangular element. It is unclear whether this is a periscopic zoom camera or a flash. However, in Mi 11i, the flash was integrated to the right of the camera system.

It is certainly not impossible that Xiaomi will again use a 108MP camera, a large number of Xiaomi smartphones have been introduced with a 108MP camera sensor.

The special feature of this model is the split on the back. It’s probably a two-tone back panel, though that can’t be definitively concluded from the brief description. Alternatively, Xiaomi may also reserve the right side to integrate an additional screen.

Similar to Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, it also features a small second display on the back. In terms of button structure and connections, this device is the same as the first model.

Model 3:

The third model has a simpler design, possibly intended as a lite version. This time, following the one large camera, two smaller vertical cameras are added. The narrow elongated flash is placed under the camera island.

Alike the first model patent, the camera island extends partially to the side. Although this design patent primarily focused on the back, all other sides are also shown. A centrally located punch-hole selfie camera is integrated into all three models.

Well, all of the above-mentioned designs seem possible and Xiaomi could likely be bringing a new smartphone featuring this kind of camera module.
