Xiaomi’s future rollable phone could have dual side extending display

Xiaomi has recently published a new patent design for its future smartphone. The patent shows a rollable smartphone concept, which rolls out from both its left and right side.

This technology extends the screen so that it can become bigger. Indirectly, it is ditching the need for a foldable phone with the functionality of a tablet. What’s more interesting is that the display seems to extend to the back panel when not rolled out.

Looking at the device from the rear, it appears to have a design similar to Mi Mix Alpha that Xiaomi announced years ago. That device had a 360-degree display, all around the phone.

Moreover, in its extended state, the rolled out display’s shape is a bit similar to a square, while in its compact form it resembles a regular modern smartphone.

Notably, the extending display could even change the device’s aspect ratios. By extending only one side, the phone could adopt a 16:9 shaped form factor, also make the movie or video watching experience from the device better.

Anyways, the phone has a dual-camera setup on the middle of its back panel. The patent also highlights the mechanism through which the device rolls out.
