WhatsApp testing voice message transcription feature

You all may familiar with WhatsApp’s voice message, the company is now working on improving it. In the recent development, WhatsApp is said to be releasing the new transcribe voice messages feature that will copy audio to texts.

WABetaInfo says that transcriptions will be saved locally on the user’s device rather than WhatsApp or Facebook servers. The feature will be optional and will require special permission to be enabled.

Moreover, the voice message transcription feature is currently under development and will be available to try out in future beta versions. As of now, it is said to be only released for iOS users but we cannot believe that WhatsApp can leave out Android from such an important feature.

Anyways, as soon as the feature releases, we’ll make sure to inform you. Below you can see a couple of screenshots that suggest how the transcription feature would work when you access it for the first time.

How will it work?

The screenshots suggest that WhatsApp would send speech data in the form of voice messages directly to the phone’s speech engine for transcription. That means Facebook would not be involved in the transcription process.

The screenshot further shows that users will be asked to allow the sharing of speech data with their phones if they want to transcribe a particular voice message on WhatsApp.

Once allowed, they will get the transcription of their voice messages in a new section called Transcript. On the other hand, another screenshot suggests that users will also get the timestamp for visiting a specific section of the message.

This transcription will be saved locally in the WhatsApp database. This will help in providing quick access to the written text.
