Xiaomi patents new smartphone with quad-curved waterfall screen

Earlier this year, Xiaomi showcased a quad-curved concept phone with an 88˚ rounded screen and without ports and physical buttons. The company has now granted a patent for that device and a similar model.

According to LetsGoDigital, the patent was filed by Beijing Xiaomi Mobile Software with the China National Intellectual Property Administration at the beginning of this year. And, the documentation was published on July 6, 2021. The said phone was designed by designer Zhao Ming.

The concept smartphone shown by Xiaomi can be seen in the image below. It shows a smartphone with a screen that also continues in the corners. This design looks significantly more stylish but it will technically be much more difficult to create such a quad-curved design.

Even it’s not possible to be manufactured as the display has nothing but a small frame, visible in the four corners of the screen with the Xiaomi concept phone. If you are thinking about Mi Mix Alpha with a wrap-around display, let me inform you that with that model, both the top and bottom were provided with a frame, so that the screen did not continue in the corners.

Anyways, this patent explains that Xiaomi wants to try such kind of technology in its future smartphones. Well, Xiaomi isn’t the only manufacturer to investigate these possibilities, Samsung has also applied for a patent in the past for a smartphone with a 3D screen that was rounded on four sides.

Model 2 –

The front side of this Xiaomi smartphone consists of a screen surface, which is a waterfall display with strongly rounded corners. There are no edges or notches visible on the screen, not even to the camera.

The rounded screen extends to a large part of the side of the device. Thus, the display surface on the side can be used to display general information, such as battery status, network information, etc. Side touch functionality may also be added.

The front camera could be placed below the screen. It should be mentioned that Xiaomi s currently planning to launch its first under-display camera smartphone, the Mi Mix 4, which could be released next month.

Also, the design does not show any physical buttons. There are also no ports and connections visible. Maybe the manufacturers have been experimenting with the idea of making future smartphones button and portless.
