Apple iPhone 14 Pro / Pro Max will come with larger battery and AOD display: Gurman

According to the latest report, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will be equipped with larger batteries, which may make up for the increased power consumption of the AOD display.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman said the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are expected to feature larger batteries, so the devices will “look a little bigger overall.” While the longer battery life is always a top customer desire, this year’s high-end iPhones may include larger batteries to support AOD displays.

Like the Apple Watch Series 5 and newer, the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro models are widely expected to feature an AOD display that will consistently showcase essential information and visual elements from the redesigned iOS 16 lock screen.

According to MacRumors, the AOD display will show information such as time, date, and widgets, and include user-customized tinted and dark versions of certain wallpapers. Since the new OLED display technology has a lower refresh rate, Apple will be able to offer AOD displays on new iPhones. While the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max support variable refresh rates up to 120Hz, the 2021 iPhones can only go as low as 10Hz.

On the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, OLED panels are expected to go as low as 1Hz, saving power when AOD displays static information. Thanks to the updated OLED display, the AOD display feature is expected to remain exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro series models and will not be extended to the iPhone 13 Pro series models.

In addition to the power savings from the lower refresh rate, the larger battery on the iPhone 14 Pro may compensate for the battery life loss that users may experience when using the AOD display feature. The two changes are accompanied by energy efficiency improvements in the upcoming A16 Bionic chip, which is expected to power the new “Pro” iPhones.

Apple is expected to announce the new iPhone 14 series at the “Super Preview” event on September 8. The series will include the 6.1-inch iPhone 14, 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Plus (or iPhone 14 Max), 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, and 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. The new lineup will mark the end of the road to the 5.4-inch “mini” form factor, which had previously only been released with two generations of the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini.

Apple is also expected to release the Apple Watch Series 8, the faster Apple Watch SE 2, and the new rugged Apple Watch Pro. According to Gurman, the AirPods Pro 2 is also expected to be released during the event.
