Xiaomi patents clamshell foldable phone with dual cameras, secondary screen

Xiaomi clamshell patent

This year, Xiaomi launched its first-ever folding smartphone – Mi Mix Fold in China. The device was a large foldable phone and now it seems that the company is planning to introduce a clamshell design model.

In a recent development, a Xiaomi clamshell phone has appeared in a patent that looks identical to Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. The company patented a device at CNIPA (Chinese National Intellectual Property Association) and it carries the application number 2020301357510.

Xiaomi clamshell patent design shows a phone that folds in the middle similar to a flip phone. However, what makes this unique is the horizontal module on the back that houses two large camera sensors, probably aided by an LED flash.

Viewers can also notice a square cutout on the right side of the camera module. Although we can’t define it, it probably could be a small secondary display to show notification icons, time, or function as a camera viewfinder.

Considering its front, there’s a pill-shaped cutout to house two or one selfie camera and an LED flash. The phone should have enough crease in the middle where it folds in half.

Besides these, the phone has a volume rocker and a power button on the right. Whereas, the speaker grille, USB Type-C port, and SIM tray are present at the bottom. It should be noted that there’s no 3.5mm audio jack.

Other than this, since this is a designed patent, there are no words on its specifications right now. We even cannot clarify whether the company is developing the phones or not.
