WhatsApp disappearing message feature now lets users auto-delete messages by default

Previously, WhatsApp introduced the disappearing messages feature that deleted chats automatically after seven days. Meanwhile, in a recent development, the company has increased the time limit. Users will now be able to set messages for auto-deletion after 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days.

In addition, WhatsApp users will now have the option to turn on disappearing messages by default for all new chats. This means that when enabled, all new chats that they or any other user start will disappear within their chosen period of time.

What if users do not open WhatsApp within the designated period?

If a user does not open WhatsApp within a period of a day, a week, or three months, the message will disappear from the chat. However, the preview of the message may still be displayed in the notifications until WhatsApp is opened.

However, the quoted messages will appear in quotes and deleted messages forwarded to another chat will not be deleted.

The new feature is now available for both Android and iOS users. To enable it, open WhatsApp settings and head to Account > Privacy > Default Message Timer.

WhatsApp claims that deleted messages are not reliable and should only be used by a trusted party as far as privacy is concerned. As mentioned, forwarding a message is a concern, but so is taking a screenshot, capturing a message with another phone camera, or copying and pasting a message into the Notes app.

This is a problem with other apps that feature momentary messaging, such as Snapchat, but those apps send screenshot alerts to the other party to take a screenshot.

Disappearing messages are set by default for all new chats or can be started manually in existing chats – both individual and group. Notification alerts the participants when the facility is online.
