Breaking: Xiaomi overtakes Apple for the first time in Q2 2021 global smartphone market

Earlier this morning, a market research company, Canalys has released the records of global smartphone shipment in the Q2 of this year. As always, Samsung was the leading smartphone supplier in the second quarter.

While surpassing Apple, Xiaomi has gained the second position for the first time in history. As per the report, Xiaomi witnessed a massive 83% year-on-year growth and a market share of 17%.

Whereas, Apple slipped to third with just 1% year-on-year growth and secured 14% of the market share. The other two Chinese tech giants – Oppo and Vivo marked 10% market share individually with the 28% and 27% YoY growth respectively.

Talking about Xiaomi, from the last few months, the company’s overseas business is growing rapidly. Canalys reported that Xiaomi’s shipments in Latin America, Africa, and Western Europe have increased by more than 300%, 150%, and 50%, respectively.

The OEM is continuously evolving and is now transforming its business model from a challenger to an incumbent. However, it is still largely oriented towards the mass market and its average selling price is about 40% and 75% lower than Samsung and Apple, sequentially.

Growing the sales of its high-end devices such as the Mi 11 Ultra seems to be a major priority for Xiaomi this year. But it could be a tough competition as Oppo and Vivo also have similar plans, both willing to spend big on above-the-line marketing to build their brands in a way that Xiaomi is not.

All smartphone manufacturers are working hard to secure component supply amid global shortages, but Xiaomi already has its visions set on the next, displacing Samsung to become the world’s largest vendor.
