Xiaomi launches AI-powered earthquake monitoring function for smartphones!

Back in 2019, Xiaomi first released the “Earthquake Warning” feature in MIUI 11. As the name mentions, this feature alerts users of an impending quake. Recently, the company announced new functionality for the feature.

As per the officials, Xiaomi mobile phones can not only receive earthquake warning information but can also monitor earthquakes. This new feature uses a type of edge computing technology to monitor earthquakes.

It further has a low-power sensor built into the mobile phone, which is used to sense seismic waves. After that, the AI algorithm effectively calculates the seismic information so that users will get the first warning if an earthquake is about to come.

The company claims that along with saving the cost of earthquake monitoring this feature also greatly increases the number of monitoring. This makes the national earthquake monitoring and early warning network more perfect.

Moreover, to join the earthquake monitoring and become a volunteer, Xiaomi MIUI users will have to open the mobile phone manager and click on the “earthquake warning” function.

Right now, we cannot clarify how accurate the prediction of the MIUI Earthquake works. Earthquake prediction is a very complicated process. In fact, there are not many accurate and successful predictions of earthquakes globally.

However, Xiaomi claims that since the launch of this function, it has successfully warned more than 35 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or higher. Also, the company has recently announced that this feature is now available in 25 provinces across China.
