Future Xiaomi smartphone could have front camera under the screen edge

Xiaomi already has plans to introduce an under-screen camera technology smartphone, Mi Mix 4 in August this year. As it alternative, the company has registered a new patent that could undoubtedly give way to a large part of smartphones to come.

According to a new report by Dutch Media, Xiaomi seems to be investigating the possibilities of incorporating the front camera under the screen, in the black screen edge.

Patent Details:

Titled “Camera lens behind the display of a mobile terminal connected to the front side by a light guide”, the new smartphone patent was authorized by the European Patent Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office last month.

The patent documentation describes a Xiaomi smartphone in which the selfie camera is integrated into the screen edge. It integrates the selfie lens on the lower edge of the screen.

The incident light can pass through the display panel by the translucent element to illuminate the camera lens. The light-transmitting element uses optical fibers, prisms could also be used.

Advantages of new technology:

With this type of camera system, the screen remains uninterrupted, there are no holes or notches visible. Currently, a punch-hole camera is experienced by many as less disturbing than a notch but it is still clearly visible.

Also, the new technology would be cheaper than a punch-hole camera as OnePlus described in its patent at the beginning of this year. It is also reported that another Chinese tech giant, Xiaomi also had a similar patent before. Its front lens was also integrated into the edge of the screen.
