Google confirms Android 14 will support satellite connectivity

Ming-Chi Kuo said that Apple is indeed developing satellite communications for the iPhone 14 / Pro series and has completed hardware testing of this function before mass production. In addition, the new Huawei Mate 50 / Pro series may also provide emergency SMS services through satellite communications supported by the Beidou system.

In addition to Apple and Huawei, Google also seems to be working on satellite connectivity. Yesterday, Hiroshi Lockheimer, senior vice president of platforms and ecosystems at Google, said in a tweet that when the first Android phone, the HTC G1, was released in 2008, getting 3G+WiFi to work was very difficult. Today, Google has begun working on connecting phones to satellites, a feature that Google will offer in the next version of Android.

According to 9To5Google, Google confirmed that the next version of the Android system will be Android 14, which means that Google may introduce support for the satellite connection function through the major version update of Android 14.

At present, the Google Android Beta program page has been updated, and Google said: “The Android 13 QPR beta update will continue until March 2023, followed by the Android 14 beta.” This means that the Android 14 developer preview may be available in March next year.

The satellite communication function is mainly a supplement to the terrestrial cellular communication system, which is mainly used in remote areas, ocean and sky scenarios, and emergency disaster relief scenarios where optical fibers and base stations are inconvenient to deploy.
