Posted on

Google has recently released the Android 12 Beta 3 for its Pixel phones. The company shows off several new and interesting features of the upcoming Android. However, they did not mention a useful improvement that is, the quick URL sharing function.

Meanwhile, our folks over at XDA Developers spotted the feature in their Android 12 beta 3 running device. As per the report, Android 12 new URL sharing feature lets users quickly copy the link in the App background card.

XDA has noticed this feature as early as the Beta 3 arrived. Since it was not clear how it worked, they haven’t shared it. But now Google itself has published a developer document that explains this feature in detail.

Android 12 URL Sharing Feature

According to official documents, any app that provides a Web UI and overrides the onProvideAssistContent method of the Activity class can enable the URL sharing function.

This method is used to provide structured information about the current foreground content to the assistant application. In other words, when the App developer adapts, the link copy button can also be displayed in the upper right corner of the backstage card of the third-party App.

The publisher has even shared the screenshots of the new URL Sharing Feature, which are mentioned below.

Current URL Sharing Method

As of now, if you want to copy a link from Google Chrome and share it with a friend, you have to tap on the address bar, then tap on the Copy button, switch over to the messaging app of your choice, and then paste the URL there before hitting send.

Alternatively, you can tap on the address bar, then tap on the Share button, select the app you wish to share the link on from the share sheet, and then select the contact you want to share it with. In both cases, it’s quite a lengthy process.
