Young Chinese turn to tarot and astrology for hope
In China, young people are increasingly drawn to spiritual practices like tarot cards, astrology, and crystal healing as they face tough times. With a weak job market and falling wages, many in Gen Z feel uncertain about their future. To cope, they’re visiting trendy spots in cities where they can sip coffee or cocktails while getting a tarot reading or horoscope. These places mix modern vibes with ancient traditions, creating a unique experience.

This growing interest has boosted what’s called the “metaphysical economy.” Experts say this market, which includes fortune-telling and spiritual healing, is worth about $1.5 billion and growing fast—around 10% each year. Social media plays a big role, with influencers sharing tarot tips and zodiac predictions, racking up millions of views. One astrology app even saw 2.6 million users in a single month, a 36% jump from last year. However, the Chinese government is keeping a close eye.

They’re worried about “superstitious” content and have cracked down on online misinformation since 2023. Still, this hasn’t stopped young people from seeking comfort in these practices. For many, it’s not just about predicting the future—it’s a way to find peace and explore their emotions in a challenging world. Businesses offering these services are advised to follow strict advertising rules and consumer protection laws to avoid trouble. Despite the risks, the demand for spiritual guidance shows no signs of slowing down as China’s youth search for meaning and hope.
