Volkswagen has introduced its ID. Buzz AD, an electric van that drives itself, set to launch as a robotaxi in 2026. This vehicle, built by Volkswagen’s ride-sharing company MOIA, uses advanced technology from Mobileye to navigate city streets without a human driver. It’s designed for businesses and cities looking to offer ride-hailing services.
The ID. Buzz AD is a Level 4 autonomous vehicle, meaning it can handle most driving tasks on its own in specific areas.
It’s equipped with 27 sensors, including 13 cameras, nine LiDARs, and five radars, to ensure a clear view of its surroundings. Passengers can book rides through a smartphone app, making it easy to get in and out without traditional controls.
Volkswagen is partnering with Uber to bring these vans to U.S. cities, starting with Los Angeles in late 2026. Testing begins later in 2025, with safety drivers on board to fine-tune the system.
The vans have four passenger seats and a luggage rack, with no need for a driver’s seat. Volkswagen aims to sell this complete package to fleet operators, offering a ready-to-use solution for autonomous ride-sharing.
This move puts Volkswagen ahead in the race for driverless taxis, competing with companies like Tesla and Waymo. The ID. Buzz AD combines eco-friendly electric power with cutting-edge tech to reshape urban travel.
