Ukraine stops plots to kill president Zelensky
Ukraine’s security service revealed on Monday that they stopped two dangerous plans to kill President Volodymyr Zelensky last year. The first plot happened in Kyiv, where two colonels meant to protect Zelensky were secretly working for Russia’s FSB. They planned to attack him at the President’s Office. The head of Ukraine’s security, Vasyl Malyuk, shared these details with reporters.

The second plot took place in Poland at Rzeszów Airport. A retired Polish soldier, once recruited by the Soviet Union, was hired by Russian agents. He planned to use a drone or a sniper rifle to kill Zelensky before he boarded a plane. Thankfully, Ukraine’s security team, working with Polish authorities, caught the suspect in time. The man is now in custody and could face up to eight years in prison.

These failed plots show how Zelensky remains a target during Ukraine’s ongoing war with Russia. On the same day the news broke, Russian drones and missiles killed at least 14 people in Ukraine, including nine in Kyiv, where an apartment building was destroyed. Zelensky called the attacks “cruel” and said no children were hurt because schools were closed for the summer. He also noted that Russia used North Korean missiles in the strikes. Despite the threats, Zelensky continues to lead Ukraine and meet with world leaders, like King Charles III in the UK, to gain support.
