Trump’s choice for FCC confirmed by Senate
On Tuesday, the U.S. Senate approved Olivia Trusty to join the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), giving President Donald Trump’s pick a key role in the agency. The vote was 53-45, with only one Democrat, Sen. John Fetterman from Pennsylvania, supporting Trusty. This decision restores the FCC’s ability to make decisions, as it was short of members after two resignations earlier this month.

Trusty, who worked for years as a staff member for Sen. Roger Wicker from Mississippi, brings deep experience in communication policy. Her confirmation means FCC Chairman Brendan Carr now has a 2-1 Republican majority to push forward plans, like reducing regulations and reviewing media companies’ actions. Carr praised Trusty, saying she’ll help deliver results for Americans.

However, some Democrats, like Sen. Maria Cantwell, opposed Trusty’s nomination. They worry the Trump administration might try to control the FCC by removing Democratic members, like Commissioner Anna Gomez, and not replacing them. This could make the agency less balanced. Democrats also criticized the decision to confirm Trusty without pairing her with a Democratic nominee, breaking a long-standing tradition. Trusty’s role will be crucial as the FCC tackles issues like media rules and broadband access. Her first meeting is set for June 26, 2025.
