Trump’s $500 American-made phone faces doubts
The Trump family recently announced a new venture called Trump Mobile, promising a $499 smartphone, the T1, designed and built in the United States. Set to launch in August, the gold-colored phone runs on Android and includes features like a 6.8-inch screen, fingerprint sensor, and facial recognition. However, experts are skeptical about the claim that it’s American-made.

Making a smartphone in the U.S. is tough due to high labor costs, a lack of skilled workers, and few local suppliers. Most phones, like those from Apple and Samsung, are built in Asia. Only one company, Purism, currently produces a U.S.-made phone, the Liberty, which costs $650 to make and sells for $2,000. The T1’s low price raises questions about how it could be profitable if truly made in America.

The Trump Organization hasn’t shared who will manufacture the T1 or where it will be built. Eric Trump hinted on a podcast that early phones might come from overseas, saying, “Eventually, all phones will be built in the U.S.” Industry insiders, like Purism’s CEO Todd Weaver, doubt a U.S. factory could be set up so quickly.

The Federal Trade Commission also has strict rules about claiming a product is “Made in the USA,” adding to the skepticism. Analysts say the T1’s specs seem basic compared to top phones like the iPhone, calling it “underwhelming.” The product page had errors, like calling the battery a “camera,” which were later fixed. For now, many wonder if Trump Mobile can deliver on its bold promise.
