Trump criticizes New York city Mayoral candidate Mamdani
On June 25, 2025, President Donald Trump sharply criticized Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, after Mamdani’s surprising win in the primary election. In posts on Truth Social, Trump called Mamdani a “100% Communist Lunatic” and claimed the Democratic Party had gone too far by choosing him.

He also mocked Mamdani’s appearance and voice, saying he “looks TERRIBLE” and isn’t smart, while attacking his supporters, including Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Chuck Schumer. Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist, defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in a major upset. His campaign focused on making New York City more affordable with plans like free public buses, rent freezes, and city-run grocery stores, funded by higher taxes on businesses and wealthy residents.

If elected in November, Mamdani would be the city’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor, as well as its youngest in a century. Trump’s harsh words signal how Republicans plan to portray Mamdani as too extreme in the lead-up to the general election.

Current Mayor Eric Adams, running as an independent after facing corruption charges, also criticized Mamdani, calling him a “snake oil salesman” on Fox News. Mamdani’s viral campaign videos, including one criticizing Cuomo that gained millions of views on social media, helped him connect with voters. The November election will test whether his progressive ideas can win over New Yorkers.
