A heartbreaking accident in Texas has led to a lawsuit against Tesla, claiming a Cybertruck’s flawed design caused a deadly fire. On April 25, 2024, James Sheehan, a 47-year-old nurse, bought a new Cybertruck. Just 102 days later, he crashed into a concrete culvert while driving home. The vehicle’s battery reportedly caught fire, burning so intensely that Sheehan couldn’t escape and perished in the blaze.
His family’s lawsuit says the crash should have been survivable, but the Cybertruck’s design trapped him inside.
The lawsuit, filed in Harris County, argues Tesla focused on the truck’s bold look over safety. Attorney S. Scott West, a former engineer, says the fire was so extreme it destroyed Sheehan’s remains, making identification nearly impossible. He challenges Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, to build safer vehicles.
Another Cybertruck fire in California last November also trapped three people, raising more concerns about the vehicle’s safety.
Tesla has faced eight recalls for the Cybertruck since its 2023 launch, including issues like stuck accelerators and loose panels. The company recently paused production for a week starting June 30, 2025, to upgrade its factory. Sheehan’s family hopes their lawsuit will push Tesla to improve safety and prevent future tragedies.
