Spotify has been promising a high-quality audio option, called Spotify HiFi, since 2021, but it’s still not here. New clues found in the app’s code suggest this feature, now referred to as “lossless,” is still being worked on and could be closer to release.
Tech expert Chris Messina spotted mentions of “lossless” in the latest desktop app update.
These hints include messages like “Lossless music, now in premium” and “best sound quality on Spotify” with audio up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz. The code also shows tips for users, like warnings about songs not available in lossless or issues with weak internet connections. A Reddit user, u/bendotlc, found similar clues in the mobile app, though the feature isn’t active yet.
Spotify’s bosses, like CEO Daniel Ek, have hinted at premium plans for “super fans” but haven’t shared a launch date.
Licensing problems slowed things down, but new deals with big music labels like Warner Music and Universal Music in early 2025 might help. Bloomberg reported that a “Music Pro” tier, including high-quality audio and other perks, could arrive later this year.
While these signs are exciting, code clues don’t mean the feature is ready. Fans hope Spotify will finally deliver the crystal-clear sound they’ve been waiting for.
