OpenAI ends partnership with scale AI after Meta deal
OpenAI is gradually stopping its collaboration with Scale AI, a company that labels data for AI training, following Meta’s recent investment in the startup. An OpenAI spokesperson explained that the decision was made before Meta’s move to buy a 49% stake in Scale AI and hire its founder, Alexandr Wang. OpenAI had already been reducing its reliance on Scale AI over the past year, seeking other providers to supply specialized data for its advanced AI models.

Scale AI was only a small part of OpenAI’s data needs, according to the spokesperson. The shift comes as OpenAI focuses on securing high-quality, tailored data to improve its AI systems, like those powering ChatGPT. Meanwhile, Meta’s $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI aims to strengthen its own AI efforts, including hiring Wang to lead a new team focused on building advanced artificial intelligence.

This move highlights the growing competition in the AI industry, with companies like OpenAI, Meta, and Google racing to secure top talent and resources. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, recently noted that Meta has offered huge bonuses—up to $100 million—to attract OpenAI’s staff, though none have left yet. As the AI landscape evolves, OpenAI is prioritizing a diverse network of data providers to support its goals while navigating a competitive market.
