Nvidia, a leading tech company, has joined a $650 million investment in TerraPower, a nuclear energy startup founded by Bill Gates. The funding, which includes support from HD Hyundai and other investors, aims to advance TerraPower’s Natrium reactor project in Wyoming. This innovative reactor uses liquid sodium for cooling and molten salt for energy storage, making it safer and more efficient than traditional nuclear plants.
It’s designed to produce 345 megawatts of power and could support the growing energy needs of AI data centers.
The investment reflects a rising interest in nuclear power as a clean, reliable energy source for tech companies. With AI demanding more electricity, firms like Nvidia are looking for sustainable solutions to power their data centers. TerraPower’s reactor, part of a U.S. Department of Energy program, is on track for regulatory approval in 2026 and aims to be operational by 2030.
Construction of non-nuclear parts has already started.
TerraPower’s CEO, Chris Levesque, emphasized that this funding strengthens their mission to provide clean energy through advanced nuclear technology. Nvidia’s venture arm, NVentures, sees nuclear power as key to supporting AI growth while reducing environmental impact.
This move aligns with other tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft, who are also exploring nuclear energy to meet their sustainability goals. TerraPower’s project could pave the way for a new era of compact, eco-friendly nuclear reactors.
