Apple’s iOS 26 introduces a fresh way for apps to share files, similar to AirDrop, but without using the actual AirDrop system. A new tool called Wi-Fi Aware lets third-party apps find and connect to nearby devices over Wi-Fi, no internet needed. This means apps can now offer features like quick file transfers, music streaming, screen sharing, or even controlling accessories, all in a smooth, direct way.
At the WWDC25 event, Apple’s Swetank Saha explained how it works: open an app on two devices, see a list of nearby users, and tap to connect.
There’s even an optional code to confirm you’re linking with the right person, just like AirDrop’s security step. While file sharing is the main use, this tool opens doors for more creative connections between devices.
Unlike AirDrop, which only works between Apple products, Wi-Fi Aware is an open standard. This means apps could let iPhones share with Android devices, making it easier to connect across different platforms.
Apple says this change isn’t because of rules from the European Union, but it comes as the EU pushes for better device compatibility.
This new feature gives developers more freedom to build sharing tools that rival AirDrop, offering users more choices for quick, secure, and local connections. It’s a big step toward making device sharing simpler and more open for everyone.
