iOS 26 makes custom ringtones simple
Apple’s iOS 26 brings a handy new feature that lets you set custom ringtones without needing GarageBand. This small change is a big deal for iPhone users who want to personalize their phone’s sound easily. To add a custom ringtone, open the Files app and pick an MP3 or M4A audio file that’s under 30 seconds long. Tap the share button, find “Use as Ringtone” (it might be under “More”), and select it.

Your audio file will then show up in the Settings app under Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone, ready to use for all calls or specific contacts. This option also works in apps like Voice Memos, but you can’t use Apple Music songs for free. Apple still sells 30-second ringtones for $1.29 in the iTunes Store, though this is an older feature. Before iOS 26, setting a custom ringtone was a hassle, often requiring GarageBand or a computer.

Now, it’s just a few taps, making it much simpler for everyone, especially those switching from Android, where this has long been easy. Users can delete custom ringtones by swiping left on them in the Ringtone settings. iOS 26 is currently in beta, with a public release expected in September 2025. This update shows Apple is listening to users who’ve wanted a straightforward way to customize their iPhone’s ringtone for years.
