Apple’s iOS 26 update brings a simple but much-needed fix to CarPlay’s Messages app, solving a long-standing issue that frustrated many drivers. Previously, CarPlay didn’t support tapbacks—those quick emoji reactions like a thumbs-up or heart that make texting faster. This meant drivers had to rely on Siri or type out full replies, which wasn’t always practical or safe while driving.
With iOS 26, tapbacks are now available in CarPlay’s Messages app. This small change lets drivers respond to texts quickly with a single tap, keeping their focus on the road. For example, you can now send a quick “like” or “haha” without dictating a message or taking your eyes off the road for too long. It’s a feature iPhone users have enjoyed since iOS 10, but its absence in CarPlay has been a sore point until now.
The update also includes pinned conversations, making it easier to find important chats without scrolling. These changes come alongside CarPlay’s new “Liquid Glass” design, which gives the interface a fresh, modern look. The iOS 26 update, set to roll out this fall, will be free for iPhone 11 and newer models.
A public beta will be available next month for those eager to try it early.
This improvement shows Apple is listening to user feedback, making CarPlay safer and more user-friendly. With over 600 million daily CarPlay users, these small tweaks could make a big difference for drivers everywhere.
