Google’s Files app gets a fresh, user-friendly look
Google is giving its Files app for Android a vibrant update with a design called Material 3 Expressive. This new style aims to make the app more engaging and easier to use, and we got a sneak peek by exploring version 1.7853.772781075.1-release of the app. These changes aren’t live for everyone yet, but they show exciting improvements. The update brings a cleaner look to the app’s main screen.

The Floating Action Button (FAB), which helps you start actions like sharing or scanning files, now has a sleek, pill-shaped design and sits in the center of the screen. This makes it stand out and feel more intuitive. The app also features slightly bolder text, though the difference is subtle for now. Other tweaks include larger thumbnails for recent files, making them easier to spot, and a redesigned progress bar that appears when installing apps or zipping files.

These updates align with Google’s goal to make Android apps more lively and user-friendly with Material 3 Expressive. This design will roll out more widely with the Android 16 QPR1 update, expected on September 3, 2025. Google is also refreshing other apps like Gmail and Google Keep with this style, aiming for a consistent, colorful look across Android. While these changes are still in testing, they promise a smoother, more enjoyable experience. Keep an eye out for more updates as Google continues to roll out this bold new design.
