Foxconn, a major partner in Apple’s manufacturing, is set to start making iPhone cases in India, marking a big step in expanding its role in the country’s tech industry. According to The Economic Times, the company is building a new facility at the ESR Industrial Park in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu, to produce metal iPhone cases, also called chassis or enclosures.
Until now, only Tata Electronics made these parts in India, while Foxconn focused on assembling iPhones at its Sriperumbudur plant and AirPods in Hyderabad. A new iPhone assembly factory is also planned near Bengaluru.
This move strengthens Apple’s push to grow its manufacturing in India, reducing reliance on China. By producing cases locally, Foxconn could boost India’s share in iPhone production by 2-3%, helping Apple get products to market faster and increase exports.
The new facility is under construction near another Foxconn plant that will make display modules for iPhones, showing a smart plan to keep key production steps close together.
Despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s call for Apple to make iPhones in the U.S., warning of a 25% tariff if they don’t, Apple and Foxconn are moving forward with their India plans. This shows their commitment to building a strong manufacturing base in India, supporting local jobs and suppliers while navigating global trade challenges.
