Apple Watch gets a big upgrade with watchOS 26
Apple’s latest update, watchOS 26, brings a major change to how the newest Apple Watch models work. The Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Ultra 2 are now using a full 64-bit system, called arm64, instead of the older arm64_32 setup. This older system was designed to save memory on small devices like watches by using 32-bit pointers.

The new arm64 system allows for bigger memory access, faster performance, and better compatibility with other Apple devices, like iPhones and Macs, which already use this system. This upgrade means apps on the latest Apple Watches can run smoother and handle more complex tasks. Developers are encouraged to update their apps to work with the new system for the best results, but older apps will still work through a compatibility feature.

Older models, like the Series 8 and SE (2nd generation), will stick with the arm64_32 system for now. Apple says support for this older system might fade as older watches are phased out. The shift to arm64 opens the door for more powerful watchOS apps in the future.

Developers can use tools that align with Apple’s other platforms, making it easier to create apps. watchOS 26 is currently in beta testing and should be available to everyone in September. This change is a big step forward for Apple Watch, promising a faster and more capable experience.
