Apple’s plan for a full-screen iPhone
Apple is working on a big change for the iPhone, aiming for a screen that covers the entire front with no edges or cutouts. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this will happen in two steps. In 2026, Apple plans to shrink the Dynamic Island—the small black area at the top of recent iPhones that holds the camera and sensors—on new iPhone models.

Then, in 2027, Apple will release a special 20th-anniversary iPhone with a true all-screen design, removing the Dynamic Island completely. This model will have curved glass edges and super-thin bezels, making the screen appear seamless. The 2027 iPhone is expected to hide the Face ID sensors and front camera under the display, a major engineering challenge.

Current screen technology can interfere with the infrared sensors needed for Face ID, but Apple is exploring solutions like transparent OLED panels to make it work. This all-screen design has been a long-term goal for Apple, first envisioned by former design chief Jony Ive. If successful, it could make the iPhone look futuristic and maximize screen space.

The journey to this design won’t be easy, as Apple must ensure the hidden sensors work perfectly without affecting screen quality. Fans are excited, but some worry about how practical a fully edge-to-edge screen will be to hold and use. Apple’s plan shows its commitment to pushing iPhone design forward, with the 2027 model marking a milestone for the company’s iconic smartphone.
