Apple’s new Smart Home display hinted in iOS update
Apple’s been rumored to be working on a new smart home display, and recent clues in the iOS 18.6 beta suggest it’s still in development. The launch was expected this spring, but issues with Siri features may have delayed it. Still, new evidence shows Apple’s making progress. A file found in the iOS 18.6 beta, located at /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ProgressUI.framework/apple-logo-1088@2x~home.png, points to a device running homeOS.

The “1088” in the file name suggests a screen resolution of 2176 pixels wide, similar to the iPad mini’s 2266x1488 display. This hints that the smart display might have an 8-inch screen, though reports suggest a 7-inch size with slightly lower pixel density. A lower resolution could keep costs down, making the device cheaper than the $499 iPad mini. Since you’d likely use this display from farther away than an iPad, a less sharp screen might not be noticeable.

The new asset doesn’t clarify when the device will launch, but it shows Apple’s still working on it, possibly waiting for Siri upgrades to be ready. This smart display could be a game-changer for Apple’s home products, blending Siri and a touch interface for controlling smart home devices.
