Apple is making it easier for app developers to promote their games and apps on the App Store. Starting later this year, developers can create promo codes for all types of in-app purchases, not just subscriptions. This change lets developers offer discounts or free items, like extra lives or in-game currency, to attract more users.
Before, promo codes were limited to free app downloads or subscription discounts.
Now, they can include things like one-time purchases, such as game items or premium features in apps. For example, a game like Clash of Clans could give out codes for free gems at an event, or a productivity app could send users a code for a discounted upgrade.
Developers can use these codes in their apps with Apple’s existing tools, like the offerCodeRedemption API, or through a simple system interface for older apps.
The feature will work on devices running iOS 16.3 or later, so even older iPhones can use these codes. This update applies to iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
Apple shared these details at WWDC25 in a session about StoreKit and in-app purchases. While the exact iOS 26 release date for this feature isn’t confirmed, it’s expected later in 2025. This is a big win for developers, as it’s been a highly requested feature for years, giving them new ways to engage players and boost app sales.
