Amazon’s boss, Andy Jassy, told workers that artificial intelligence (AI) will likely shrink the company’s office staff in the coming years. In a message shared with employees, he explained that AI tools, like those creating text or images, will take over some tasks, meaning fewer people will be needed for certain roles. However, he also said new kinds of jobs will pop up, though he didn’t say exactly how many or what type.
Jassy called AI a game-changer, already helping Amazon with things like managing stock, answering customer questions, and improving product pages. He urged workers to learn about AI and try it out, saying it could make their jobs more exciting by handling boring tasks. Amazon, which has about 1.5 million employees worldwide, is betting big on AI, including upgrading its Alexa assistant and building tools for its cloud service.
While Jassy didn’t give details on which jobs might go or how many, he made it clear that AI will make the company more efficient. This news follows Amazon’s earlier layoffs, where over 27,000 jobs have been cut since 2022. Other tech companies are also using AI to streamline work, raising concerns about job losses. Jassy’s message is a heads-up for workers to adapt to these changes.
