Amazon plans to cut office jobs as AI grows
Amazon’s boss, Andy Jassy, recently shared that the company will likely need fewer office workers in the coming years because of artificial intelligence (AI). In a message to employees, he explained that AI tools are changing how work gets done at Amazon. These tools, called AI agents, will handle some tasks that people do now, meaning fewer people will be needed for those roles.

However, Jassy also said new kinds of jobs will pop up, though he’s not sure how many. Amazon is using AI in almost every part of its business, from warehouses to online shopping. Jassy believes AI will make work faster and better, but it will also shift what jobs are needed. He didn’t say exactly how many jobs might go away, calling it tough to predict.

A survey from the World Economic Forum backs this up, showing that 40% of companies plan to replace some workers with AI for tasks that can be automated. Amazon, which employs over 1.5 million people worldwide, has already cut some jobs this year and laid off more than 27,000 since 2022. Jassy encouraged workers to learn AI tools to stay ready for the future. While AI is creating new opportunities, it’s also clear that some roles will change or disappear as the company leans more on technology.
