Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, shared in a recent memo to employees that the company plans to use artificial intelligence (AI) more in the coming years. This shift will likely lead to fewer office jobs at Amazon. Jassy explained that AI tools, especially generative AI, will take over many routine tasks, reducing the need for some current roles while creating new ones.
“We’ll need fewer people for certain jobs and more for others,” Jassy wrote, noting it’s hard to predict the exact impact. He expects Amazon’s total office workforce to shrink as AI makes work more efficient. The company, with about 1.5 million employees worldwide, is already using AI in areas like inventory management, customer service chatbots, and product page improvements.
Jassy encouraged workers to learn about AI and adapt to these changes. He believes employees who embrace AI will have a big impact and help Amazon stay competitive. The company is investing heavily in AI, including upgrading Alexa and creating tools like “Buy for Me” and “Recommended Size” for shoppers.
Amazon isn’t alone—other tech companies are also using AI to change how work is done. While some worry about job losses, Jassy sees AI as a tool to make jobs more creative by handling repetitive tasks. This comes after Amazon cut over 27,000 jobs since 2022, mainly in devices, services, and books teams.
