AI to play a major role in 6G technology
Nokia and Ericsson, two leading telecom companies, recently shared their thoughts on the future of 6G networks after a meeting in Prague. They believe artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning will be key to making 6G faster and smarter. Nokia expects 6G to launch commercially by the end of 2029, promising longer battery life for phones and better network performance.

The companies also highlighted a new technology called 5G-6G Multi-RAT Spectrum Sharing (MRSS). This will allow smoother transitions from 5G to 6G by sharing radio frequencies more efficiently than current 4G/5G systems. Ericsson noted that MRSS will be crucial for upgrading networks without disruptions. AI is expected to improve many aspects of 6G, such as managing data, boosting network speed, and simplifying operations.

For example, Nokia said AI could help with tasks like data collection and performance checks, while Ericsson pointed out its potential in enhancing location-based services on devices. Although 5G was expected to enable things like self-driving cars and smart cities, it hasn’t fully delivered yet.

With 6G expected in about five years, experts hope it will build on 5G’s foundation to bring these ideas to life. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), a group setting telecom standards, is already working on 6G’s framework to ensure it meets future needs.
