As the smartphone market shrinks, sales of mobile phone-related components are declining. According to a report released today by analyst firm IC Insights, the global CMOS image sensor (CIS) market will decline this year for the first time in 13 years due to declining mobile phone sales, slow growth in mobile phone cameras, and a weak global economy.

The report pointed out that after a weak growth of 4% in 2020 and 5% in 2021, the global CMOS image sensor market will drop from US$20.1 billion last year to US$18.6 billion in 2022, a decrease of 7%. %. Meanwhile, analyst firm IC Insights predicts that in 2023, the global CMOS image sensor market will grow by 4%, recovering to $19.3 billion. The CMOS image sensor market will keep growing over the next few years and will reach $26.9 billion in 2026.

Global CMOS Image Sensor marketThe report pointed out that in 2021, Sony will firmly occupy first place in the CMOS image sensor market, accounting for about 43%. In Sony’s first quarter of fiscal 2022 (April 1, 2022, to June 30, 2022), Sony’s image sensor dollar revenue decreased by 12.4% sequentially. Sony believes that its overstocking of phones and image sensors will ease in 2023.

Currently, nearly two-thirds of CMOS image sensors are used in mobile phones. Analyst firm IC Insights believes that by 2026, that percentage will drop to about 45 percent. In addition to the slowdown in the growth rate of smartphones, the reasons for this decline are the rising demand for cameras in other devices, such as smart cars, medical equipment, etc.
