Xiaomi’s going to extend Android upgrades to three years with Mi 11T

Xiaomi 11T and 11T Pro haven’t been launched yet and the company has announced three years of major operating system updates and four years of security patches for them.

Usually, Xiaomi offers two Android updates to its mid-range and flagship devices and three years of quarterly security updates. Even Xiaomi’s high-profile flagship, Mi 11 Ultra is also compatible with only two Android OS switches and three years of quarterly Android security patches.

Xiaomi believes this change will better meet the longer lifecycle of smartphones while improving the long-term security of those who depend on them. The move also puts Xiaomi next to Samsung’s Android upgrade commitment, which allows its newer devices four years of security updates with three major Android upgrades.

Xiaomi’s head of Product & Technology, Albert Shan said, “With the continuous improvement made to smartphone hardware, the life cycle of a smartphone is gradually lengthening, meaning users aren’t required to replace their smartphones as frequently. For this reason, more consumers place great importance on receiving the latest operating system updates, along with the latest features. Xiaomi is committed to providing users with industry-leading hardware and lasting performance.”

“In continuation of this commitment to users, Xiaomi is further extending the life cycle of Xiaomi’s smartphones by ensuring three generations of Android operating system updates. This way, users can choose to use their current devices for a longer period, and enjoy the latest features along with it. At the same time, we will also provide users with security updates that ensure their devices operate securely for a longer period of time,” he added.

Xiaomi 3 year update policy

What about older Xiaomi phones?

As of now, the new policy does not apply to current Xiaomi smartphones. As mentioned above, even Mi 11 Ultra will follow the old update policy. Xiaomi clearly states that only the 11T and 11T Pro will support this move.

Xiaomi 11T and 11T Pro:

Xiaomi has announced the launch of the pair of new smartphones for September 15. These are said to equip a 120Hz OLED panel. Further, the base model could be powered by Dimensity 1200 chipset and could feature a 64MP triple camera system.

Whereas, the Pro version could sport Snapdragon 888 SoC, a 108MP triple camera setup, a 5,000mAh battery with 120W fast charging support. The other details about the products are still under wraps. We can expect them to be revealed very soon.
