Xiaomi patents new smartphone with under display rotating camera technology

Xiaomi has recently applied for a new smartphone patent with a rotating camera inside the fuselage. As per the reports, it can be used as a front under-screen camera and a rear main camera at the same time.

Xiaomi is one of the manufacturers working on under-screen camera technology. We have already been informed that the first Xiaomi phone with an under-screen camera is expected to be released later this year. However, the patent goes one step further, because the camera placed under the screen can rotate.

Following the details, this under-display flip camera is placed at the back of the screen, with at least one camera lens. By default, the camera faces the rear and is part of a larger camera system, which consists of several lenses.

Moreover, viewing the image, only the top lens of the triple camera is rotatable. The other two lenses remain pointed to the rear at all times. The camera rotation could be possible by means of a magnetic or motorized drive module.

Besides, when the selfie camera is activated, the camera will be rotated internally, after which the display portion will be disabled around the camera module to let in enough ambient light. Well, it could be hardly noticed because this display part is very small, whereas the remaining and largest display part can be used as a viewfinder to provide a preview of the image to be recorded.

Moving forward, it is said that the device will have a laser autofocus system that is able to focus quickly and accurately even in poor lightings. However, Xiaomi has already used this technology in Xiaomi Mi 9.

Talking about the phone’s display, as per the extensive documentation, different types of screens, such as – LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), OLED (Organic light-emitting diode), or CRT display (Cathode Ray tube) can be used.

It is worth mentioning that the company has also provided a digital photo of the camera module under development in the patent images. You can have a look at the image below.
